German food at Pfingsten, in Guernsey
The diversity of different nationalities was celebrated as part of a special Pentecost service and event at St Joseph’s RC Church in St Peter Port, Guernsey, where 25 different countries were represented by their flags, in church, and afterwards with samples of traditional food, drink and national songs or dance. A German stand provided such delicacies as black bread with garlic sausage, extrawurst, bockwurst, currywurst, bratwurst, sauerkraut, Lübecker marzipan, saltzstangen and butterkuchen - washed down with Himbeergeist schnapps (which was particularly popular!). There was also an impromptu performance of ‘Jetzt fahrn wir übern See’!
What was impressive was the enthusiasm shared by such a melting pot of differing nationalities, all keen for the other to sample a little bit of home hospitality and traditional fayre.
