Guernsey Newsletter, April 2015
Dear Friends,
It’s the time of year again, where I keep you updated on the activities of the Guernsey Friends of Biberach.
First of all, I would like to invite you to come to our AGM which will take place on Thursday, 23rd April 2015 at 12 o’clock at the Peninsula Hotel. As usual, the Deportees Association will have their annual St George’s Day luncheon at 12.30 for 13.00. If you want to be part of that, please phone Tom Remfrey on Tel. 254185 to reserve your place.
Bailiff’s Visit to Biberach Sept 14
This was Sir Richard Collas’s first visit to Biberach. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Jonathan Le Tocq, Deputy Robert Sillars (Education) and Deputy Darren Duquemin (Sport). They have discussed setting up links between a school in Biberach and a local school for a programme of exchanges and also competing with one another in a variety of sports such as football. Hopefully young people from Guernsey will be taking part in the Guernsey Week in Biberach in October visiting schools or competing in their respective sport.
Visit from Biberach for Liberation Day
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Island’s Liberation, a very special occasion. A group of about 30 citizens from Biberach will be in the Island to celebrate with us. The Bailiff has also invited an official party from Biberach headed by the Oberbürgermeister Norbert Zeidler. I hope you will be able to meet some of the group during their stay in the Island. They will be staying at Les Cotils. They will be arriving on the evening of Wednesday, 6th of May. The next day they will have an Island Tour, walk across to Lihou in the afternoon and have the evening free. On Friday 8th May they will be visiting the Occupation Museum and have a cliff walk in the afternoon. That evening the Berlin Philharmonic Octet will give a concert in the Town Church which the group from Biberach will attend. And on Liberation Day they will take part in the official celebrations.
As you can see, there will be plenty of opportunities where you could meet up with the visitors from Biberach if you so wish.
German Language Course
Every July Biberach organises a one-week German Course for young people from its partner towns. The young people should have a reasonable command of German, about GCSE level. You will find details of the course on our website. The course can be booked directly by contacting Sabine Engelhardt by e-mail: S. [email protected]
Guernsey Week in Biberach October 2015
The second big event this year will be the Guernsey Week which will take place in Biberach during the October Half Term holidays from 24 October to 1st November. At the moment a lot of ideas for that week are being discussed, but it is too early to be more specific. Do please get in touch if you want to be part of the group travelling to Biberach. The easiest way to travel to Biberach is probably by Ryan Air from Stansted to Memmingen or by Easyjet from Gatwick to Munich. At this stage we don’t know yet which groups, musicians or other interested parties will be travelling to Biberach, but I would be pleased if you let me know if you are interested to be part of it.
I hope to see you at our AGM or the Deportees’ luncheon on Thursday, 23rd April.
With best wishes,
Irene Harvey
Secretary, GFBA
