Guernsey teacher wins German Teacher Award
At a recent ceremony at the German Embassy in London, to celebrate the 2011 German Teacher Awards, Guernsey’s Virginia Hanna was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution towards the promotion of Germany and the German language during her 19 years of teaching at The Ladies’ College, Guernsey.
Over 150 teachers and representatives from education institutions came from all over the UK for the 8th such Awards ceremony to be organised by the German Embassy. Deputy Ambassador Dr Lübkemeier opened the festivities after the prize-giving, in the gardens of the Ambassador’s Residence. German, Austrian, Swiss and British organisations also gave reports on German language and culture in their area of work.
Mrs Hanna was nominated by The Ladies’ College head teacher, Jo Riches, who explained, ‘It was a very full application process, so they must have been impressed. Mrs Hanna is a highly experienced teacher and gifted in languages, but what makes her stand out is her care and commitment to every single student. As well as teaching the language, she has promoted our understanding of Germany and its culture.’
As an Award winner, Virginia receives a personal prize and a certificate. The purpose of the Award is to recognise outstanding achievement by individual teachers of German in the UK, to highlight and pay tribute to the work of German teachers in the UK and to encourage the commitment of the winners’ schools to modern language teaching.
Well done, Virginia.
